60’s DAY 2017!
meet kinnaird elementary's new teachers
Mr. Nugent is teaching grade 5 this year. So far he loves his class and says they’re very enjoyable. He is teaching in the classroom that used to be the art room, and the space he has is being well used.
His plans and thoughts for this year is to do lots of hands on learning and projects. His goal is to make learning fun and intriguing. Mr. Nugent is hoping to do lots of learning outside and use technology for different subjects.
Believe it or not this is his first year teaching… EVER! For the last couple years he’s been in school learning how to teach. He decided that he wanted to teach about 10 years ago when he was teaching kids drumming.
Mr. Nugent has been playing drums for 19 years! That’s longer than I’ve been alive! He has performed professionally and taught the drums. He also went to art school for a bit.
He is originally from Calgary and his family still lives there now.
We are all excited to be in the school with Mr. Nugent, and hope it’s a fantastic year for him.

Mrs. Shannon is new to this school this year and is teaching grade 1/2. Mrs. Shannon has taught all kinds of grades: kindergarten, grade four, and grade six. Also she was a learning support teacher and use to teach at Twin Rivers Elementary. She was twenty-six when she started teaching.
In her free time she enjoys reading biographies and crime novels, her favourite book is The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. Mrs. Shannon also enjoys horseback riding. Even though she has never owned her own horse, Mrs. Shannon started riding when she was only five years old! She would go with her family to a horse camp at 100 Mile House even now her neighbor allows her to borrow their horse most of the time. Mrs. Shannon also likes to hike but nothing too crazy. She likes trails on Idaho Peak, Kokanee Glacier, the Pulpit Rock in Nelson, Slocan Valley and some Castlegar trails that are kid friendly.
Once all this is done Mrs. Shannon likes to sit down every Friday night with her husband and two kids. They like to watch a movie or play some games. Sometimes they go out to dinner or enjoy family time at home.
We are very excited to welcome Mrs. Shannon to Kinnaird Elementary this year. We hope she has a great time getting to know the students and staff.

Mr. Cooper is teaching grade 7 and is Kinnaird’s Vice Principal this year. Mr. Cooper has taught in Victoria and other towns along the coast before he came to Kinnaird. He has taught many other grades. For example, at SHSS he taught grade 10. Mr. Cooper has taught for 10 years so far. Mr. Cooper has been teaching since 2007. Mr. Cooper always wanted to compete in the Olympics because it was his dream to be in it, but as he said, soon he found out he wasn’t good enough to compete. The sport Mr. Cooper wanted to go into was rowing. Mr. Cooper has spent most of his life in Victoria. Mr. Cooper gave our school a 9/10, so far that is. The only thing Mr. Cooper wants to change is for students to find their own headspace. Once the students find their own headspace he will give this school a 10/10.

Mr. Paterson is one of our new teachers! He is teaching grade 4/5 at Kinnaird Elementary. Mr. Paterson graduated in Nelson B.C. from the West Kootenay Teacher Education Program, and started his career of teaching in September 2017. He is very kind and welcoming. When you walk into the room he greets you with a big friendly smile.
This is Mr. Paterson’s first year teaching his own class. Before this he was a TOC. So far he likes how our school is very interactive with parents, teachers and students. This year he is stepping up to be the boys grade 6/7 volleyball coach. Although he wishes there would be more sports for younger students.
Mr. Paterson likes to do many things on his free time but one of his favourites is playing his guitar. He also likes to visit people.
There are many new teachers in our school and Mr. Paterson is one of them he is very kind and does his job well!

Ms. Schoeber is a new teacher with a bright personality who has just started teaching at Kinnaird Elementary. She has past experience teaching a grade 7 class at Twin Rivers, but she is enjoying teaching the younger kids. Her expectations for this year are to get her students into a routine. Mrs. Schoeber has a talent besides teaching. She went to school to become a chef, but settled on being a teacher. Mrs. Schoeber is happy with her job and gets along very well with the staff. She can’t wait to see what this year will hold for her class.
